Holiday Project - Valentine's Visits 2015
(General Information & Signup Form)
On February 14, 2015 (Saturday) at 9:30 a.m. , Volunteer Houston's Holiday Project will organize volunteers into teams to
visit local nursing homes to bring a bit of Valentine's cheer to persons in those facilities. Each team
will be assigned to one facility. Volunteers are invited to come to any one of the following
3 meeting locations (where the Valentine's visits will be organized and launched) at 9:30 a.m.:
CENTRAL (Upper Kirby District/just east of Greenway Plaza):
Volunteer Houston offices -- 3015 Richmond, Suite 100 (77098)
NORTHWEST (Cy-Fair area):
Grace Care Center of Cypress -- 9602 Huffmeister (77095)
Grace Care Center of Katy -- 23553 West Fernhurst Drive (77494)
(Click on any of the location addresses for a map of, and contact info for, the respective area.)
At the meeting locations, the volunteers will divide off into teams, each team to visit one facility.
(Though we use the term "team", we should mention that for liability reasons we can't encourage persons
who don't know each other to ride together, so each person is responsible for their own transportation,
both to the meeting place and then on to the facility they will be visiting.)
The volunteers will be provided with directions to their respective destinations, as well as
Valentine's cards to take to the persons they visit.
Time spent at the facilities will vary, but generally the visits last from about 45 to 90 minutes,
depending on the size of the facility and other circumstaces unique to the team and the facility.
(Sometimes the staff on duty want us to visit in a communal area of the facility such as a recreation
room or dining hall. Other times we are invited to do both a communal visit and then
break into small clusters to visit room-to-room for those persons who don't get out of their rooms.
Which of these approaches is used affects the total length of time we spend at a particular facility.
But in either case, we have to plan to be finished by 11:30 a.m. because that is the time they
start getting ready for lunch at most nursing homes.)
There is no minimum age for participation. Youth groups and families with (reasonably well-behaved)
children of any age are cordially welcome to participate.
Due to the season's heightened awareness of flu-related dangers, for obvious reasons we ask that
persons with significant cold or flu symptoms refrain
