Holiday Project - Christmas Visits 2012
(General Information & Signup Form)
On Christmas Day (12/25/12) Volunteer Houston's Holiday Project will organize volunteers into teams to visit local nursing homes
(and perhaps one or two hospitals if the scheduling can been finalized) to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to persons in those facilities.
Each team will be assigned to one facility. Volunteers are invited to come to any one of the following 3 meeting locations at which the
Christmas visits will be organized and launched:
CENTRAL (Upper Kirby District/just east of Greenway Plaza):
Volunteer Houston offices -- 3015 Richmond, Suite 100 (77098)
NORTHWEST (Cy-Fair area):
Grace Care Center of Cypress -- 9602 Huffmeister (77095)
Grace Care Center of Katy -- 23553 West Fernhurst Drive (77494)
(Click on any of the location addresses for a map of, and contact info for, the respective area.)
To accommodate differing schedule preferences of volunteers, two different meeting times are offered at all three locations:
9:30 a.m. and 12 Noon.
At the meeting locations, the volunteers will divide off into teams, each team to visit one facility. (Though we use the term "team",
we should mention that for liability reasons we can't encourage persons who don't know each other to ride together, so each person
is responsible for their own transportation, both to the meeting place and the facility they will be visiting.)
The volunteers will be provided with maps to their respective destinations, Christmas cards to take to the
persons they visit, and copies of Christmas songs so that the team can some
informal caroling sometime during their visit.
Time spent at the facilities will vary, but generally the visits last from about 45 to 90 minutes, depending on the size of the facility
and other circumstaces unique to the team and the facility. (Sometimes the staff on duty want us to visit in a communal area
of the facility such as a recreation room or dining hall. Other times we are invited to do both a communal visit and then
break into small clusters to visit room-to-room for those persons who don't get out of their rooms. Which of these approaches
is used also affects the total length of time we spend at a particular facility.)
There is no minimum age for participation. Youth groups and families with (reasonably well-behaved) children of any age are cordially
welcome to participate.
Volunteers often ask if they should bring anything. That isn't necessary-- we will provide the essential materials for the visits
as described above. (And by the way, the motto of The Holiday Project is "You are the Gift!")
Due to the season's heightened awareness of flu-related dangers, for obvious reason we ask that persons with significant cold or flu
sypmtoms refrain from participation.
